Disney+ Unveils Japanese Series ‘Death Stranding Isolations’ From Game Creator Hideo Kojima

Disney+ has unveiled Japanese anime series Death Stranding Isolations (working title) from veteran game creator Hideo Kojima, based on the popular post-apocalyptic game series ‘Death Stranding.’

The upcoming anime series will be directed by Takayuki Sano (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods) and produced by E&H Production (Project Bullet/Bullet).

The project will be created through 2D hand-drawn animation, the streamer announced today at the Disney APAC Showcase, held at the Disneyland Hotel in Hong Kong.

Besides the ‘Death Stranding’ video game, Kojima is known for creating ‘Metal Gear.’

Set in the same world as the video game, Death Stranding Isolations follows Sam Bridges as he attempts to save America, and those trying to deal with their isolation in their own way.

An old man is trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges. A female warrior is trying to kickstart a world of constant fighting. A boy holds a grudge against Bridges, and a girl has embraced her loneliness. On the precipice of the end of humanity and the world, their fates and hopes converge, as another story of Death Stranding begins.

“I grew up loving Japanese anime, and it has shaped my worldview,” said Kojima, on the stage at the showcase. “I’ve always been a fan of Disney, since I was small, and I was glad that they showed my documentary on the platform. When they approached me, I decided to work with them.”

The documentary Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds, showcasing Kojima’s behind-the-scenes work and creative process, streamed on the platform in 2023.

Sano added: “We want this to be a global animation project, with global talent.”
