Huge Scandinavian retailer finally confirms Stockport Merseyway opening date for new shop

To mark the occasion, the first 100 customers through the doors will receive a voucher for a free large, tufted rug worth over £60

Stockport town centre is preparing for a new addition to its shopping district with the imminent arrival of a brand new store from a major Scandinavian retailer.

Merseyway Shopping Centre will soon be home to Danish retail chain, Søstrene Grene, a contemporary store known for its affordable home décor, furniture and stylish lifestyle products. It will officially open its doors on Friday, 28 November at 9:59am.

Taking over a 4590 sq ft unit formerly occupied by JD Sports, which last year relocated to a larger flagship store within the centre, the Søstrene Grene shoping experience will feature soft lighting, classical music and a distinctive labyrinth-style layout, which has become known for.

Mikkel Grene, Group CEO and co-owner of Søstrene Grene, said: “We’re delighted to be opening in Stockport and further strengthening our presence in Greater Manchester. The community has shown such warmth towards Søstrene Grene and we’re excited to share our universe of design, creativity and ‘hygge’ with even more people in the region.”

The opening expands on the brand’s presence in Greater Manchester, with stores already in Altrincham and Manchester City Centre. With over 370 stores globally, the Stockport store will be the UK’s 66th store.

Just in time for the festive season, the Stockport store will also showcase a collection of Christmas décor, gifts and home accessories, designed to bring warmth and creativity to every home. Shoppers can expect to find velvet boxes, wrapping paper and gift tags, decorative trees and hanging stars.

To celebrate the launch, the store will welcome the community with giveaways, live entertainment and festive refreshments. The first 100 customers through the doors will receive a voucher for a large-tufted rug (worth over £60) as a complimentary gift.

Guests can also enjoy refreshments, explore the new collection and will have the opportunity to take home a goodie bags. The celebration will be brought to life with performances from ballet dancers and a live string duo, adding a touch of magic and capturing the creative essence at the heart of the Søstrene Grene universe.

Jonathan Cooper, the brand’s North of England Country Manager added: “We can’t wait to introduce the Søstrene Grene experience to Stockport and offer a calming, creative escape for shoppers ahead of the busy Christmas season.

Founded in Aarhus, Denmark in 1973 by Inger Grene and Knud Cresten Vaupell Olsen, Søstrene Grene – which translates as the ‘Green Sisters’ – is celebrated for its curated collections of home décor, furniture, craft itemsand gift ideas.

Now led by Grene’s sons, Mikkel and Cresten Grene, the brand continues to grow internationally. The Danish homewares retailer has also confirmed more openings across the UK as it plans to double its footprint here by 2027, targeting 100 stores nationwide.

The grand opening will take place at Merseyway Shopping Centre on Friday, 28 November at 9:59am.
