Khvicha Kvaratskhelia set to give Liverpool another painful reminder

Liverpool was strongly linked with a bid to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia during the 2025 January transfer window, but the winger ended up moving to Paris Saint-Germain

Liverpool could be about to get another reminder of what might have been when Paris Saint-Germain takes on Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The two sides served up an all-time classic in the semifinal first leg, sharing nine goals, and it promises to be a pulsating affair in Bavaria in the second leg. A place in the final against Arsenal is the reward for the winner, after the Gunners moved past Atletico Madrid in the other semi-final on Tuesday.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is likely to play a key role in the outcome of the game between PSG and Bayern, having firmly established himself as one of the best wide forwards in world soccer over the last few years.

Kvaratskhelia first came onto most soccer fans’ radars when he played a key role in Napoli winning the Scudetto in 2023, and since completing a lucrative move to PSG last January, he has gotten even better.
Liverpool fans must find themselves wondering what might have been possible had the Reds beaten PSG to Kvaratskhelia’s signature 16 months ago.
The Reds were being heavily linked with a move for the Georgian heading into the January transfer window in 2025, with transfer guru David Ornstein reporting that Liverpool was considering a mid-season swoop for him.
But when Napoli reluctantly decided it was time for Kvaratskhelia to move on, Liverpool did not submit a bid for him.
At the time, Arne Slot had both Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo at his disposal on Liverpool’s left flank, so it’s easy to see why the Reds ended up keeping their powder dry before addressing other areas of the pitch during the summer transfer window.

But the fact that Diaz has since left and Gakpo has had a disappointing season makes it more frustrating that Liverpool missed out on a player that it knew all about several years ago.
In 2022, Kvaratskhelia tormented Liverpool for Napoli during a Champions League game, prompting post-game praise from the then Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
“When he has the advantage of the first movement, then he is already gone,” Klopp said.
“But if you cannot do that, then you need to be protected because he has speed, he is cheeky, he goes inside, he can go outside, and that makes it always really difficult.
“I know people will talk about one or two situations when Trent tried to be in front of him and the ball goes through, but the boy is really good and really quick and you have to defend him together in these moments.”
Since moving to PSG, Kvaratskhelia has already helped to knock Liverpool out of the Champions League twice, and he could well be on his way to a second successive title.
