When is Walmart’s Black Friday sale?

Walmart’s Black Friday sale this year takes place in three stages. The first event took place Nov. 14 through 16 and was both in-store and online. The next event kicks off on Nov. 25. The first two days, Nov. 25 through Nov. 27, will be online only. From Nov. 28 through Nov. 30, sales are available online and in stores. On Monday, Dec. 1 Walmart will have an online-only Cyber Monday sale.

Are Walmart Black Friday deals available both in-store and online?

Yes, but the availability changes. As stated above, the first three days of the Walmart’s big Black Friday event (Nov. 25–27) will be online only. From Nov. 28 through Nov. 30 deals are available in-store and online at Walmart. The retailer’s Cyber Monday sale is an online-exclusive affair. Having said all of that, there are plenty of early deals and we expect them to extend beyond Dec. 1.

Will tariffs interfere with Black Friday deals?

Lots of CNET readers are concerned about tariffs and how they could affect holiday shopping. It’s certainly possible that tariffs could impact Black Friday sales, as we have seen some related price hikes, including on Nintendo Switch consoles. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find great deals on tech and other items.

The best way to determine if you’re getting a good deal is to track the item’s price history before making a purchase. You can do this on sites like CamelCamelCamel and Price Tracker, or by using the Keepa browser extension. We’ve rounded up several useful shopping tools for you to check out, and we’ll highlight the best deals we find throughout the event.

Best Black Friday retailers

  • Amazon: One of the world’s largest online retailers, Amazon offers massive discounts with significant savings on tech, home appliances, and smart home equipment.
  • Walmart: Save big on televisions, laptops, appliances like refrigerators and more at Walmart’s Black Friday event.
  • Best Buy: Black Friday is historically a great time to buy TVs, and Best Buy has you covered for that and more.
  • Home Depot: Eyeing home improvement tools? Home Depot has the best discounts on tools, appliances, and even grills.
  • Target: It may not be as big on Black Friday as other retailers, but Target does offer some great deals on toys, gifts and board games.

Why are they called Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

The term “black” has historically been used to denote distressing or calamitous events. The earliest known use of Black Friday for the Friday after Thanksgiving was to refer to the practice of workers calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving in the early 1950s. Around that same time, US police adopted the term to describe the traffic conditions during the first major holiday shopping date.

After attempts to move to the term “Big Friday” failed, merchants attempted to ameliorate the term Black Friday in subsequent years, suggesting that its origin was not due to the terrible traffic the shopping spree created, but because the profit it generated put stores “back in the black” in financial terms.

Then, in 2005, the National Retail Federation coined the term “Cyber Monday” because it had noticed a spike in online traffic the Monday following Thanksgiving. At the time, it was believed it was because people were making online purchases while they were at work following the holiday, so their kids couldn’t see any gift purchases and because work computers typically had faster internet connections. There was some chatter about calling the date Black Monday or Blue Monday — because hyperlinks are blue — but eventually, everyone settled on the more futuristic-sounding Cyber Monday. In 2014, Cyber Monday became the biggest online shopping day in the country.
