Everton went down a man when one of its players slapped another, then their 10 men took a surprising lead against the run of play in the first half.

Yet despite 61 minutes of 11v10, Manchester United could not find a goal — let alone two — and slumped to defeat in front of the home faithful.

United have some excuses in that forwards Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko were unavailable, but they played 77 minutes in total with 11 men to Everton’s 10 and could not score once.

So how did Ruebn Amorim see it?

Thoughts on the game: “They were the better team with 11 players or 10. I felt since the first minute that we were not there with the same intensity so they deserved the win.”

What was missing? “The way we faced the game. The other team helped us with a sending off. What we do in every single moment of the game if they have 10 — let’s push the opponent to the final third, to be near any transition, really to be focused on the game.”

Did this feel like a big step backwards? “Yes especially in the way we played the game. Forget about the results. The result is also really bad but I’m more concerned with the feeling I had during the game.”

Anything more on Matheus Cunha’s injury? “Let’s recover Cunha and we’ll see if he will be ready for the next game.”

How did Joshua Zirkzee play in Cunha’s place? “He did alright but I think everyone should play better tonight.”

What did you say to the team after the game? “Nothing. We have training tomorrow. I will deal with that tomorrow.”
