During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the plans for the WrestleMania main event, detailing the likely matchups based on company direction and televised teases.
Meltzer stated that the original plan for the main event involved: “Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, but, and Seth Rollins did say that he’s hoping to get back for WrestleMania.”
The status of Seth Rollins, who has been sidelined, led the focus to two other key matchups. Meltzer noted that, as seen on Raw, that WWE is currently teasing two top-tier opponents for Roman Reigns:
“I was given the impression that the WrestleMania main event that there will be on Saturday [at Survivor Series], there will be teases that will help you figure out who the WrestleMania main event will be….The tease on Monday was absolutely a tease for the main event. Which would lead you to believe it’s Roman Reigns challenging either Cody Rhodes or Punk…”
The rivalry among the three men was highlighted on the final Monday Night Raw before Survivor Series when Reigns, Rhodes (Undisputed WWE Champion), and Punk (World Heavyweight Champion) shared the ring in the opening segment.
Roman Reigns concluded the segment by stating that one of the championship titles would look better on his shoulder. He left the ring without specifying if he meant Rhodes’ Undisputed Title or Punk’s World Heavyweight Title, leaving both men uncertain of his target.
Meltzer offered his take on which match the promotion is likely to prioritize: “…in which case, because Cody Rhodes has been done twice before, I would favor them going with Punk…”
“…but I think that on Saturday we will probably have a better idea, although I’m going to guess that they’ll shoot teases with both of them, just to keep that question going.” All three figures are scheduled to participate in the Men’s WarGames Match this Saturday at Survivor Series.
The team is comprised of Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, Roman Reigns, Jey Uso, and Jimmy Uso, facing the team of Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, Logan Paul, Drew McIntyre and Brock Lesnar.
