UTEP set for midweek showdown with Liberty

The UTEP Miners are set to return to the Sun Bowl tomorrow night for a midweek Conference USA clash against the Liberty Flames. Both teams enter the game with a 1-4 record. UTEP is coming off a 10-day break following their loss to Louisiana Tech, using the time to reset and refocus.

“We went back to ‘what is our identity and why is it identity?'” said UTEP head coach Scotty Walden. “Let’s get back to our core plays that reflects that.”

A major focus for the Miners offensively has been to limit turnovers. Quarterback Malachi Nelson emphasized the importance of slowing down and playing within the offense.

“I’m trying to slow everything down in my mind,” Nelson said. “I have been playing really fast and rushed. I just need to relax and find the guys that are schemed open.”

Liberty brings a dynamic option-based offense, and Walden noted the need for the UTEP defense to stay disciplined.

“You have to have great eyes,” Walden said. “That option lures you to sleep with motions and shifts. Then they have play action shots off of all that.”

Tomorrow’s game marks the third all-time meeting between the Miners and Flames, with Liberty having won both previous encounters. The sports books have Liberty as a 1.5-point favorite. Tickets for the game are available at half price for those interested in attending.
