Nationwide cheese recall issued after Listeria found in Ambriola products

WEST CALDWELL, New Jersey — A New Jersey cheese distributor has recalled several popular grated cheese products sold under several national brands after federal testing detected listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this week.
According to the FDA, the Ambriola Co. said routine sampling uncovered the bacteria in products processed at its West Caldwell facility, prompting the recall of select items sold under the Ambriola, Locatelli, Member’s Mark, Pinna and Boar’s Head labels. The cheeses were distributed nationwide between Nov. 3 and Nov. 20.
Although no illnesses have been reported, listeria poses a serious risk to older adults, young children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems, the FDA said. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea and diarrhea, but infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, according to the company.
The recall covers a variety of grated Pecorino Romano products in retail cups, bags and bulk packaging, with expiration dates ranging from March 2026 through May 2026.
Customers are urged not to consume the cheeses and to discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers seeking information can call Ambriola’s hotline at 1-800-962-8224 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Eastern.
Ambriola said production and distribution of the affected cheeses has been paused while the company reviews its sanitation and food-safety procedures.
