Urban Meyer Has Strong Words for Louisiana Governor’s Lane Kiffin Decision

The LSU Tigers lured Lane Kiffin away from Oxford just before the Ole Miss Rebels’ upcoming College Football Playoff run. And to do so, the school prepared a massive contract offer for the 50-year-old head coach.
Kiffin’s contract with LSU is reportedly worth $91 million over the next seven years, and his $13 million per year makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football. If the Tigers fire Kiffin before the end of his contract, he’ll reportedly receive 80% of his remaining deal.
This contract directly opposes a recent declaration from Louisiana governor Jeff Landry, who said LSU would have a “totally different contract” structure for its next head coach.
Landry was publicly frustrated about the required contract buyout for fired head coach Brian Kelly, who was owed $54 million after his dismissal earlier this season. The Louisiana governor said there should be “no guarantee” on LSU’s next coaching contract.

During a recent episode of “The Triple Option” podcast, legendary college football coach Urban Meyer called out LSU for not following through on Landry’s declaration.
“This is after the governor. Elected governor, said we will not have those contracts again,” Meyer said, via On3 Sports. “Lane [Kiffin], I looked it up. It’s a guaranteed contract. The same agent. I mean, my God.”

Kiffin’s LSU contract also reportedly includes a clause that rewards him for each of Ole Miss’ potential wins in this year’s College Football Playoff. The former Rebels coach will get the same bonuses he would’ve received on his previous Ole Miss contract: $150,000 for participation in the first round, $250,000 for participation in the quarterfinal and $1 million for a national championship game win.
Ole Miss will receive its final CFP ranking during Selection Sunday on Dec. 7.
