The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Eastern Shore and lower Maryland Eastern Shore, warning residents to prepare for light snow and hazardous travel on Friday. The advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 5.
Forecasters expect snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches across Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset, inland Worcester, with the lower end of the forecast expected in Accomack, and Northampton counties. While totals will remain relatively light, the timing of the snowfall could create slick road conditions during both the morning and evening commutes.
State agencies are preparing for widespread winter weather across Virginia. Virginia State Police will adjust staffing as needed Friday to respond to weather-related incidents and are urging drivers to monitor updates from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Motorists are encouraged to use extra caution around VDOT trucks working to treat and clear the roads.
VDOT crews have already begun pretreating Route 13 and secondary roads with brine to prevent snow and ice from bonding to the pavement. As the storm arrives overnight, crews will patrol and treat interstates, primary roads, and high-priority secondary routes with salt and sand. Ice and wet pavement may refreeze Friday evening, and officials stress the importance of giving snow-removal teams plenty of room to operate.
Both State Police and VDOT are offering safety reminders for anyone who must travel:
• Use headlights to increase visibility
• Clear all snow from your vehicle to prevent blowing snow from impairing your view or other drivers’
• Slow down and drive for the conditions
• Avoid tailgating and allow more stopping distance
• Always buckle up
• Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready, including wipers, fluids, tires, and battery
• Pack essentials such as a scraper, blanket, water, snacks, charger, and flashlight
