Port Orange Holiday Parade canceled due to expected bad weather

Christmas fire safety tips from Volusia Fire Rescue Chief Joe King

Among other things, people should keep their trees watered and away from heat sources, King said.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the annual Port Orange Holiday Parade scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, has been canceled, the city has announced.

“The latest forecast for Sunday predicts heavy rain and potentially hazardous conditions, creating dangerous visibility issues and other hazardous road conditions along the parade route,” according to a post on the Port Orange City Hall Facebook page.

“If the weather occurs as forecasted, these conditions pose significant risks for parade floats, walkers, first responders, and the families who gather to watch,” the post stated. “We believe in the interest of public safety, and out of an abundance of caution, the City must cancel this year’s Holiday Parade.“

The National Weather Service in Melbourne forecasts a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon.

The city’s announcement added that it will be impossible to reschedule the parade due to the logistics of permitting road closures and a busy schedule of other holiday events.

The Port Orange Christmas In the Park holiday event is still scheduled to unfold from 5:30-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Kenneth W. Parker Amphitheater, 2001 City Center Circle, the Facebook post stated. That event features a concert, hay rides, pictures with Santa and the city’s annual tree-lighting ceremony.
