VDOT addresses overnight refreezing

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – During Monday’s winter weather, snowplows cleared roads and pushed that top layer of snow off, but left a watery mix of snow.
But overnight, the concern was black ice, as that water was expected to freeze on the road, leading several school divisions to announce Tuesday closures.
Black ice along with winter conditions challenged drivers all day Monday.
“Well, the first challenge is it’s a lot of fall, and like you can barely see, because the snow coming down and the road real slippery. Just watch how you drive and drive slow and just be safe and keep it at a steady pace,“ one driver said.
VDOT gave an update on the road conditions, saying most of the interstates and primaries are in minor condition, and they are focused on plowing those first before the secondary roads.
They also said they did expect refreezes overnight on all roads, with the morning commute impacted, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and elevated surfaces.
