Big Aasgaard Upgrade: Rangers Make ‘Excellent’ Star Priority January Target

After an incredibly busy summer transfer window, Rangers are still keen to upgrade their squad in the new year, and Danny Rohl already knows what he wants to do as a priority.

Russell Martin brought in 13 new faces to Ibrox during the summer, before a poor start to the campaign saw him sacked as manager and replaced by Rohl, as the Ibrox club look to save their campaign both domestically and in Europe.

The German has started his tenure relatively well, with five wins and three draws from his first 11 games in charge, with Rangers currently nine points off the top of the table having played a game less than table-toppers Hearts. Now, after having a chance to study his squad and find out about the players he has, he has made a decision on what he wants in January.

Rangers Make David Watson No.1 Target

Scoring goals has been a major issue for Rangers this season for the most part, and reports have suggested that Rohl and Rangers have made plans to make three signings in January, with talks already held about a deal for a new number nine.

But it has now emerged that the Light Blues’ top target for January is a new attacking midfielder, with Kilmarnock star David Watson emerging as the priority.

The 20-year-old has been a regular at the club for several seasons already, and he has started 15 of Kilmarnock’s 16 games in the Scottish Premiership so far in the current campaign, registering three goals and one assist in the process. But despite his best efforts, the side have managed just two victories, and now a winter exit is being tipped.

The midfield area has been a problem for Rangers too, with Nicolas Raskin, Mohammed Diomande, Connor Barron all having mixed campaigns, and Watson’s ability to play deeper if necessary will also give Rohl options tactically.

Watson Would Be a Major Aasgaard Upgrade

Should Watson arrive, it would seem inevitable that he would take the place of Thelo Aasgaard in the Ibrox starting lineup, with the Norwegian struggling since his move from Luton in the summer.

The 23-year-old has registered just one goal and assist so far in all competitions for Rangers, and considering he is playing in a team that is much better than Kilmarnock, it’s fairly worrying that he is being outperformed by a younger player in Watson.

Watson, who has been described as ‘excellent’, would also bring another Scottish player into the club, something that fans have complained has left the club in recent years, and that would immediately bring more of a connection off the pitch.

It’s unlikely to be a particularly expensive deal, but if Rohl gets his way in January, then he will be upgrading on Aasgaard and strengthening the squad in one swoop.
