This all started between 4:35 a.m. and 5:10 a.m., when dispatch records showed three different crashes all between Virginia Avenue and Clements Ferry Road. This was only the beginning of what has proved to be a treacherous morning on the Lowcountry’s roadways; multiple crashes have stacked up on the bridge in the time since.

Backed up traffic could be seen on much of the bridge before the 5 a.m. hour even hit. Conditions have worsened since.

First Alert Meteorologist Joey Sovine said that there did appear to be moisture on the bridge that is likely to freeze over in conditions such as the ones the Lowcountry has seen Wednesday morning. North Charleston Police warned that these crashes were indeed caused by ice and some dense, patchy fog.

Drivers are urged to take the Ravenel Bridge if needing to get onto Daniel Island and Mount Pleasant. Motorists should use caution while driving in these conditions and avoid the areas of these crashes where possible and drive slowly in light of the potential for ice.
