Cardinals make decision on RB Trey Benson’s future

The Trey Benson saga is over.

After two and a half months of uncertainty over the second-year running back’s status, Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon officially ruled him out for the season on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Gannon’s announcement means the Cardinals will not activate Benson on Wednesday, which was the final day of his three-week window to return to practice.

For Benson, it’s a crushing end to a season that once carried so much promise. After James Conner went down with a season-ending injury in Week 4, Benson had an opportunity to stake his claim to the backfield — both in 2025 and moving forward.

Instead, he suffered his torn meniscus just a week later and could never return.
