WFAN host turns up the heat on Mets’ David Stearns: ’Right now, I hate you’

WFAN host Evan Roberts has heard enough.

On his afternoon drive show, alongside Giants legend Tiki Barber, Roberts admitted he needed distance from Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns.

With the winter meetings nearing their conclusion, Stearns has spoken every day, creating clips Roberts has had to react to on his show. But at this point, even the sound of Stearns’s voice is driving him crazy.

“I need time away from this guy, and I know he talks at the winter meetings, and I do (Rico Brogna Podcasts) in which I react to him, even his voice pisses me off,” Roberts said in a video shared on X/Twitter.

“And I’m not saying you’re dead to me. I’m not saying I hate you. I’m saying, right now, I hate you, like right now in this moment,” Roberts continued. “Doesn’t mean tomorrow I won’t put my arm around you and say, ‘All right, David, let’s get back to work. I still trust you.’ But right now, hearing his voice and that I’m smarter-than-you sound … I don’t want to hear it.”

Roberts’ ire for Stearns spiked after it was reported that the Mets lost Díaz for a mere $3 million.

On Tuesday, reports circulated that Edwin Díaz will be signing a three-year, $69 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. New York’s offer to Díaz was $66 million over three years with “modest deferrals,” per Joel Sherman of the New York Post — that’s just a $1 million per season difference.

After a down season last season, returning from a year-long absence because of knee surgery, Díaz produced one of his best seasons ever in 2025. He posted a 1.62 ERA with 98 strikeouts over 66 1/3 innings, recording 28 saves.

In six seasons with the Mets, Díaz is 24-22 with a 2.84 ERA and 253 saves. His 14.89 K/9 (537 strikeouts in 517 1/3 innings) is the best mark in MLB (minimum 100 innings).

By defecting to the Dodgers, Díaz leaves a gaping hole in the back of the Mets’ bullpen. His departure paves the way for former Yankee Devin Williams to be the Mets’ full-time closer, unless New York can import another elite reliever this offseason.
