Pete Alonso is now another forever Met who never made it there

This is going to be a hard one for some of you to read right away. I get that. I do. It probably took me until 1992 or so before I could read anything about the day Tom Seaver was traded before I could get through it without wanting to rip up the page. I purposefully missed too many 76ers playoff games when Julius Erving was doing his thing because the sight of him in that uniform made me queasy.
It isn’t easy being a fan. In truth, it’s mostly brutal being a fan. There are more lousy teams than good ones. There are more disappointing players than surprising ones. Ticket prices never go down. “Free” games on TV are increasingly extinct. You eat more garbage than you ever sip champagne.
And yet you keep coming back.
Why?
