First Look at Jason Momoa as Lobo Revealed in New ‘Supergirl’ Trailer

It’s been a long time, but we finally have our first look at former Aquaman Jason Momoa as Lobo in the DCU’s Supergirl. The actor, who, of course, portrayed the aquatic superhero Aquaman in the DCEU, will switch sides (sort of) and leave the waters of Earth for the depths of space as the intergalactic antihero, who is expected to play a major role in both Supergirl and the newly rebooted DC franchise.

The first Supergirl trailer has now been released and gives us our first look at Momoa in his new DC role. And it couldn’t be more perfect. Sporting pale white skin, long black hair, and a biker-esque outfit, Lobo looks incredibly comic-accurate. Momoa has always felt that Lobo is the role he was born to play – and it’s impossible to disagree.

James Gunn has previously revealed that Momoa was always his first choice for Lobo, with the DC Studios co-chief having big plans for the character. “The comic (“Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow”) is very much a bunch of little stories. We needed to create one throughline, one three-act story, so Lobo helps us to do that,” the filmmaker and producer explained. “I love Lobo. I always thought he was a great character to adapt. I think he’s maybe, in some ways, the biggest comic book character that’s never been in a film. So I think it was a cool thing to do.”

Momoa, meanwhile, has been pushing for the role of Lobo for years. The actor even thought that was the role Zack Snyder would offer him for Batman v Superman. Of course, the role was Aquaman instead, and while he brought a different, crowd-pleasing take to the DCEU, it’s clear that Lobo was always the better fit.

As for Supergirl, the superhero outing will be the second big-screen outing for the DCU. The reboot is directed by Craig Gillespie of I, Tonya and Cruella fame, with a script written by Ana Nogueira, and stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl alongside Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem, The Witcher) as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone, The Old Guard 2) as the villainous Krem, David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer, The Studio) as Supergirl’s father, Zor-El, Emily Beecham (King & Conqueror) as Supergirl’s mother, Alura In-Ze, Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Dune) as Lobo, and David Corenswet as Superman, with Krypto also set to feature.

The trailer confirms that Supergirl will follow a similar story to the comic book arc on which it’s based, Tom King’s “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which finds the title character heading off into the far reaches of the universe on a mission of revenge. Coming as part of the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, Supergirl is due to be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.
