Long Island postal worker accused of stealing gift cards from mail while on the job in Suffolk County

SUFFOLK COUNTY, Long Island (WABC) — At a time when we’re sending holiday tidings through the mail, a clerk at a Long Island post office is accused of being a grinch who stole greeting cards and gifts.

Suffolk County DA Raymond Tierney says Jovanni Jamison-Lewis, 35, was caught red-handed on surveillance video taking two envelopes out of the outgoing mail at the Oakdale post office.

Each envelope contained a greeting card and gifts for the intended recipients. One held a T.J. Maxx gift card and the other contained three New York State Lottery scratch-off tickets.

Once she removed the gift card and lottery tickets, Jamison-Lewis put the now-empty greeting cards back into their envelopes and returned them to the outgoing mail, prosecutors at the Suffolk County district attorney’s office said.

The following day, surveillance cameras allegedly captured her using the stolen T.J. Maxx gift card at the store in Port Jefferson. Investigators said they recovered the items she allegedly purchased with the stolen gift card at the time of Jamison-Lewis’ arrest.

“We want people to safely enjoy the holiday season and for those bad actors who are going to exploit our citizens and steal their property, we will hold you responsible no matter what,” Tierney said.

Jamison-Lewis was arrested on Nov. 24 and officials say at that time, she had two stolen pieces of mail hidden in her pants and four more in her pocketbook. Investigators searched her home and vehicle and allegedly recovered 20 more pieces of stolen mail.

The suspect was arraigned Friday morning on charges including grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and official misconduct.

Jamison-Lewis resigned after her arrest. She was released after being charged and is due back in court in January.

The Suffolk DA says anyone who thinks they were a victim should reach out at (631) 853-4626.
