BMW driver slams into front of building in Santa Monica; 1 person hospitalized

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) — A driver in a BMW violently smashes into a printing shop overnight in Santa Monica, leaving the car crumpled in the middle of the street and a business owner with a massive mess.
It happened at Sir Speedy Printing and Marketing Services on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Princeton Street. The driver apparently crashed into a support beam, causing major damage to the lower level of the building.
One person, believed to be the driver, was taken to the hospital in an unknown condition.
The printing shop owner spoke with Eyewitness News Friday morning and said she received a call from her alarm company shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday.
When she got to the scene, her business was unrecognizable.
“We took good care of this place,” said Rehana Jiwani. “We really put in a lot of love and care to the place, and to see it come down … literally, it’s painful.”
“I just don’t have any words,” she added. “I can’t even explain … we don’t have a storefront. You can see a Christmas tree, it was very celebratory, we have a lot of customers that come for lots of needs.”
Meantime, Jaun Matute said a family lives on the second story, above the printing shop, and said they have since been displaced.
“He has a classmate who lives upstairs,” said the neighbor. “Right now, I’m concerned about that family, if they’re going to have a place to live during the holidays and what their options are.”
Several people told ABC7 drivers frequently speed down the street.
“This is a very dangerous corner,” said one resident. “We’ve lived here 14, 15 years … we have cars accidents constantly.”
It’s unclear what caused the crash and there was no word on the driver’s condition.
Jiwani said no matter what, they’ll be there for the community.
“We want our customers to know that they are our priority,” she said. ” The work is being done. It may not be done in the physical facility right here, but their work is getting done.”
