New Jersey man charged after allegedly posing as Homeland Security officer, using wife’s marked car
WASHINGTON TWP., N.J. (WPVI) — A Washington Township, New Jersey, man is facing criminal charges after police say he impersonated a federal officer and entered a home under construction – while armed – during a property check on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said an officer was dispatched to a Strand Avenue home after a caller reported that the door had been left open.
Officers later learned the caller was the same man who met the responding officer at the scene, identified as Nicholas Cabral, who lives nearby and claimed he was a Homeland Security officer.
“He was in a marked police car with police lights on it. It was lettered Homeland Security, federal police,” said Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik. “It wasn’t until they cleared the call that our officers believed there was something suspicious about him.”
Body camera footage captured Cabral asking the officer, “How do you guys operate – contact/cover or what?” and responding “Homeland, yeah” when asked if he was with the agency.
Police said Cabral, who was carrying a gun, entered the home alongside the Washington Township officer. The pair determined that a construction crew had left the door open.
Chief Gurcsik said the situation raised red flags.
“It’s kind of odd for Homeland Security to respond to a municipal police department call for service here in Washington Township at a residential home,” he said.
Officers contacted the agency and confirmed Cabral is not employed by Homeland Security and is not a member of any law enforcement agency.
Police said Cabral’s wife is a Homeland Security police officer who was away on a 20-day deployment, and during that time, Cabral used her marked vehicle multiple times, according to police license plate readers.
“One of the cameras does have the overhead lights on it, so he was actually using it in like a response mode,” Gurcsik said.
He is facing charges of impersonating a police officer and possessing a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Police said he had a permit to carry, which has since been revoked, and his gun was seized.
Attempts to reach Cabral by phone and at his home were unsuccessful.
“It’s serious for our officers. We need to keep our officers safe, we need to keep the residents safe. It’s very, very disturbing,” Gurcsik said.
Police are asking anyone who may have interacted with Cabral while he was using the marked vehicle to contact them. Homeland Security has not responded to requests for comment.
