Daniel Craig’s $90 Million ‘Zodiac’ Replacement Is the Perfect Sleeper Hit for Knives Out Fans

Best known for his role as James Bond, Daniel Craig once teamed up with David Fincher for a Zodiac-esque serial killer thriller that’s returned to global streaming charts. In 2011, Craig headlined The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo with Rooney Mara and Christopher Plummer. The film, which also stars Stellan Skarsgård, follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) and his search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years. In America, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is streaming on Peacock, but globally, the film is streaming on HBO Max, where it’s one of the most popular movies in the world.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was well-liked by both critics and audiences upon release, so much so that it earned equally strong scores of 86% on both the Tomatometer and the audience-driven Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. The psychological thriller also parlayed this strong reception into box office success, which isn’t always easy. The film cost $90 million to make, which was a lot, especially in 2011, but it grossed over $230 million globally. The film’s success comes at the same time that Craig’s newest release, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, is dominating Netflix.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is based on the novel Män som hatar kvinnor by Stieg Larsson, and Steve Zaillian wrote the screenplay with Fincher directing. For Fincher, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was only one year after he directed one of his best movies, The Social Network. It was four years after Zodiac, which certainly led to so many comparisons between the two films. Though they are vastly different, they’re both psychological thrillers centered around unpredictable mysteries.
Is David Fincher Doing an American ‘Squid Game’?
David Fincher is working on an American Squid Game reboot, and news even broke last month that the project will begin filming in February. It will reportedly be completely disconnected from the original Netflix Squid Game show and feature entirely new characters with a new story. Cate Blanchett, who had a cameo at the end of Squid Game, is reportedly not attached to star in the project in any way. Casting and other details likely won’t be made available until after the project begins filming next year. There has been no word on a potential release date yet, either.
Be sure to watch The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo on Peacock in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
