Deputies investigating reports of looting in flooded Snohomish County

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. — Deputies in Snohomish County are investigating reports of looting in a flood-stricken area following the widespread chaos and destruction caused by the week’s atmospheric river.
Around 11 a.m. on Dec. 13, deputies responded to reports of people launching boats and kayaks in a restricted zone near Marsh Road and Lowell Larimer Road in south Snohomish County.

Although deputies made contact with several individuals, no confirmed victims of crime were identified at that time.
However, a homeowner affected by the flooding later reported that their property had been vandalized and had items stolen. The homeowner, who had returned to recover their boat and check on their property, managed to confront kayakers and recover their belongings.
This incident was reported to deputies after they had already engaged with people who had ignored road closure signs.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of securing valuables and utilizing security cameras to deter theft and provide evidence. Recording serial numbers of possessions can also aid police in tracking stolen items.
Authorities also urged the public to respect road closure signs and avoid entering flooded areas.
“These people have already been victimized enough and are trying to recover after a natural disaster,” the department stated.
