School closures in Kentucky: When JCPS decides to close due to weather

With help from the National Weather Service and school facilities, learn how JCPS handles student safety during adverse weather.

Some schools in the Louisville metro area have closed as a major cold front sweeps through the U.S., bringing extreme cold and subzero wind chills to the region.

Temperatures will only be a few degrees above 0 the morning of Dec. 15, according to the National Weather Service. Snow cover will also cause outdoor temperatures to fall even closer to 0, if there is any snowpack left from the previous showers. Temperatures could reach the low 30s by the afternoon.

Here are the districts we are tracking after the latest round of snow in the Louisville area:

JCPS schools will have a nontraditional instruction (NTI) day Dec. 15 due to “forecasted frigid early morning temperatures,” district spokesperson Carolyn Callahan said in a statement. Students will not have live instruction from their teachers.

“This decision was made with the safety and well-being of our students in mind, as they would be waiting at bus stops and walking to school in extremely cold conditions,” Callahan said.

All after-school athletic and extracurricular activities will proceed as scheduled.

Jefferson County Catholic elementary and high schools will operate on a delay Dec. 15, according to a Facebook post from the Archdiocese of Louisville.

Oldham County Schools will utilize a nontraditional instruction day, the third of the school year, Dec. 15. Officials took into account the “poor road conditions in parts of the county” when making their decision, district spokesperson Lori Webb said.

District administrators have not yet announced whether classes will be impacted for Dec. 15.

Greater Clark County Schools will participate in Synchronous eLearning on Dec. 15 because of inclement weather, the district announced in its Facebook page.

Teachers will deliver live instruction via Google Meet, the post stated. Attendance is required.

Clarksville Community Schools are on a 2-hour delay Dec. 15, district spokesperson Brian Shaw said.

NAFCS schools will participate in Synchronous eLearning on Dec. 15 because of “continued low windchill temperatures and some roadways that remain a concern for bus travel,” the district stated in a Facebook post.

Most students will participate in live instruction from 9 a.m. until about 1 p.m., the post stated. Attendance will be taken.

Shelby County Public Schools announced Dec. 15 will be a nontraditional instruction day because of morning temperatures and side roads that remain snow-covered, according to a Facebook post.

Spencer County Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay, according to a Facebook post.

Fort Knox Community Schools will operate as normal, according to a Facebook post.

Classes have concluded for the Fall 2025 term at the University of Louisville. Officials have not yet announced whether campus operations will be impacted.

Classes have ended for the Fall 2025 semester on the University of Kentucky campus. University administrators have not yet announced whether final examinations will be impacted.

Classes have ended for the Fall 2025 term at Bellarmine University. Administrators have not yet announced whether school operations will be impacted.

University leaders have not yet announced whether classes will be impacted for Dec. 15.
