Road closures
In Sumas, State Route 9 remains closed between Morgan Road and the Canadian border. The Sumas border crossing is still closed. State Route 542/Mount Baker Highway is closed at milepost 35 due to slides blocking the roadway.
Several other roads remain closed in Whatcom, including Hannegan Road, between Bakerview Road and Van Wyck Road, Marine Drive in three places, and a section of Woburn Drive between Iowa Street and Lakeway Drive. More here.
In Skagit, State Route 20 between Burlington and Sedro-Woolley reopened around 10:00 a.m., according to the Sedro-Woolley School District. SR 20 remains closed near Bacon Creek Road, east of Marblemount.
State Route 530 is closed from Suiattle River Road (MP 57) to Concrete Sauk Valley Road (MP 61), between Darrington and Rockport.
Closures remain on Lyman Hamilton Highway and South Skagit Highway. More here.
School closures and delays
Nooksack Valley School District in Whatcom County is closed today, Dec. 14, the district announced Friday. Communities of Everson, Nooksack and Sumas, served by the school, were hit hard by flooding.
“During this time, school staff will be reaching out to families to check in, offer support, and help connect those in need with available resources,” Superintendent Matt Galley said. Schools will likely reopen on Tuesday to provide “important stability, routine and care for students and families,” but any absences related to “flooding, displacement or recovery” will be excused.
Geneva Elementary School is also closed Monday, but its closure is due to a widespread power outage in the area.
In Skagit, Concrete School District initially planned a two-hour delay for Monday, but just after 9 a.m. canceled school for Monday and Tuesday. The decision is based on “unstable ground and road closures,” ongoing evacuation notices in parts of the community, “rising river levels and high winds,” and “low staff availability,” the district wrote in a notice to the community.
Out-of-district transportation and after-school activities are also cancelled for Monday and Tuesday.
Burlington-Edison School District and Sedro-Woolley School District will also operate on a two-hour late start. In Sedro-Woolley, no out-of-district transportation will be provided, and several bus routes are impacted in the Hamilton area, Clear Lake and Sedro-Woolley.
