Newcastle vs Fulham preview

A first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby in nearly ten years couldn’t have gone much worse for Newcastle, as Nick Woltemade’s well-taken own goal meant the Magpies welcomed rivals Sunderland back to the top flight with the warmest of receptions.

Eddie Howe’s side will be bitterly disappointed with that result, and their league position of 12th, but they are having a better time of things away from the Premier League.

Newcastle sit a respectable 12th in the Champions League and comfortable wins over Bradford and Tottenham mean they have enjoyed a strong start to their EFL Cup trophy defence, which resumes with a quarter-final tie against Fulham tonight.

The defeat at Sunderland may have knocked confidence slightly but, like most of their worst work this season, it came on the road.

It has been a different story at St James’ Park, where their only defeats at their Tyneside fortress have come against Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona.

The most recent of those defeats was in September and it is seven wins and one draw in the eight home games since, suggesting Newcastle’s derby defeat may be quickly forgotten, especially with an EFL Cup semi-final beckoning.

Fulham made the semis themselves in the 2023-24 campaign and will be aiming to repeat that feat but they needed penalties to see off third-tier Wycombe in the previous round and a run of five losses in seven Premier League away games leaves them looking vulnerable.

The Cottagers have also lost midfield metronome Alex Iwobi, key defender Calvin Bassey and tricky winger Samuel Chukwueze to Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations and Marco Silva’s weakened side look set for a quarter-final exit.

Back Barnes to star again

Newcastle have plenty of defensive injuries and Howe may have to keep his big names in at the back but he is likely to rotate further forward, meaning Harvey Barnes should be handed a start.

The England star has impressed in the Champions League this term, averaging a goal every 85 minutes, and his pace and fantastic finishing make him the standout scorer pick at St James’ Park.

Wissa’s want to impress may lead to a card

A rotated frontline should also mean a first Newcastle start for Yoane Wissa, who has struggled with fitness since heading north and has subsequently been left out of DR Congo’s Afcon squad.

His lack of match fitness may show and a couple of late challenges could be left in on Fulham’s defenders by the former Brentford man, who was booked five times in the Premier League last term.

Bruno Guimaraes to have a shot on target

The Newcastle skipper will be eager to get his side back to winning ways and is proving to be a real threat, registering six shots on target in his last four appearances.

Harry Wilson to have a shot on target

The Welsh winger is in scintillating form, scoring six goals in as many games for club and country, and his ability to shoot from range makes him a solid selection to test Aaron Ramsdale.

Sasa Lukic to be booked

No Fulham player has picked up more yellow cards this term than the Serbian battler’s tally og five and he will be kept busy by Newcastle’s talented and energetic midfield.
