Ohio University fires football coach Brian Smith for cause

Ohio University has fired football coach Brian Smith for allegedly “engaging in serious professional misconduct,” according to a statement from the school Wednesday.

“Today, Ohio University terminated the contract of Head Football Coach Brian Smith for cause,” the statement read. “The termination follows an administrative review of allegations that Smith violated the terms of his employment agreement by and participating in activities that reflect unfavorably on the University.”

Smith was put on leave two weeks ago but it wasn’t made public why.

Smith led the Bobcats to an 8-4 regular-season record in his only season as head coach. John Hauser, who was named interim coach when Smith was placed on leave, “will continue to lead Ohio University football as the Bobcats take on the University of Nevada Las Vegas Rebels in the 2025 Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl on Tuesday, December 23,” the school statement said.
