Timberwolves Named Among Favorites to Acquire Cavaliers’ $197 Million Guard Ahead of Trade Deadline: Report

The Minnesota Timberwolves have gotten off to a strong start to the 2025-26 NBA season as they currently sit sixth in the Western Conference standings with a 17-9 record.

Of course, Minnesota is coming off back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances and they are looking to take another step forward in the playoffs this season by making a run to the NBA Finals.

So far, the Timberwolves have looked like a serious threat in the West this season behind their core of Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert.

Despite this, Minnesota may elect to make some moves ahead of the trade deadline to bolster their roster to try and make a run at a title this season.

Timberwolves Reportedly Looking to Upgrade Point Guard Position

One position that the Timberwolves have reportedly been interested in upgrading this season is the point guard position and there have been reports that they are open to making a trade for a new lead guard ahead of the trade deadline.

For Minnesota, they have been using Donte DiVincenzo as their starting point guard while Mike Conley, Rob Dillingham and Bones Hyland have been key pieces off the bench but while these players have been solid this season, it appears as though the Timberwolves may be looking to add another star guard to their roster.

Because of this, the Timberwolves have been linked to multiple players, including both Ja Morant and Coby White, though a recent report has them as one of the top landing spots for a guard from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

According to NBA analyst Jake Wenbach, the Timberwolves are considered to be a potential candidate to pursue Darius Garland from the Cavaliers alongside the Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards.

Of course, the Cavaliers have taken a step back this season after finishing with the best record in the Eastern Conference last year, which could see them move some of their key pieces on their roster, potentially including Garland.

For Garland, he would provide the Timberwolves with a reliable scorer and playmaker alongside Edwards in the backcourt who could be the missing piece in their starting lineup.

This season, the 25-year-old guard is averaging 15.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game while shooting 36.2% from the field and 28.2% from three.

The two-time All-Star has struggled at times this season, especially shooting the ball, and he has also played in only 11 games this year due to injuries.

Despite this, adding Garland to their roster could be a major boost for the Timberwolves’ title chances as they would finally be able to fill their void at the point guard position.

While that may be the case, the Cavaliers may be unwilling to move Garland this season and it also depends on what the Timberwolves would have to give up to acquire him, which could cause them to look elsewhere to find a new point guard.
