Mets to Sign Top International Prospect Wandy Asigen

The Mets are signing shortstop prospect Wandy Asigen out of the Dominican Republic, Francys Romero reported Thursday. The 16-year-old Asigen had previously agreed to sign with the Yankees, but backed out of it. The contract will become official when the 2026 international signing period opens on January 15. Kris Gross, who is now in charge of the Mets’ international free agent scouting, helped get the deal to the finish line. Gross has spent the last two years as the team’s Vice President of Amateur Scouting.
Asigen is a consensus top-five prospect in the 2026 free agent class – with MLB Pipeline ranking him as its No. 2 prospect. He has been lauded for his bat, with Pipeline giving him a 65-grade hit tool and a 60-grade power tool.
“The excitement around Asigen’s prospect profile stems primarily from his special left-handed swing,” Pipeline writes. “He has ripped off 110+ mph exit velocities and is repeatedly able to find the barrel during in-game action.”
Defensively, Asigen’s arm is solid, but his speed is what makes him stand out, as demonstrated by his 6.5-second 60-yard dash.
“The tools are there for Asigen to play shortstop, where he’s still learning to slow the game down and play under control, but he’s a quick-burst athlete with plus speed and an above-average arm,” Ben Badler of Baseball America writes.
Asigen just turned 16 in August, so he will play the entire Dominican Summer League season as a 16-year-old.
