Gulf Ferries Tied Up Due to High Winds

Things will dry up, clear up and freeze up today across the island but tomorrow will be more spring-like as winds switch around to the south or southwest. However, Marine Atlantic, which is still struggling to get all the commercial traffic across the gulf following several weather interruptions over the past few weeks, is again scrubbing crossings.
Wanda Batten, a meteorologist at the Gander Weather Office, says winds are going to pick up over the next few days, which may prompt warnings for some areas.
She says the system is nowhere near what we had earlier in the week when winds hit 130-140 km/h, but they could gust at 100 km/h, especially in the area of the Wreckhouse.
Local Businesses Anxiously Await Shipments for Christmas Shopping Rush

While Marine Atlantic is doing what it can to make the most of available weather windows to keep goods flowing, some businesses and residents are still waiting on parcels and packages at one of the busiest times of the year.
Jane Manuel of Posie Row, a business on Duckworth Street in St. John’s, says they put their Christmas orders in months in advance.
She says they’ve received all their outstanding orders, but delays do cause anxious moments for businesses trying to make the most of the Christmas rush before the long winter lull begins.
Manuel says they often receive and ‘sit on’ Christmas inventory from about June onwards, but there are always last-minute orders of items that they don’t know are going to be important to them until the season begins. “We’re always kind of holding our breath in these last crucial days before Christmas.”
In the meantime, Manuel says business in the downtown has been good so far this season, with plenty of foot traffic.
