O-Zone: Local irritation

JACKSONVILLE – Let’s get to it …
Great news signing Meyers to an extension. I also predict he is going to have a monster game against the Broncos to leave no doubt he deserved that extension.
The Jaguars indeed have agreed to terms with wide receiver Jakobi Meyers on what reportedly is a three-year contract extension. This is absolutely great news for the Jaguars, just as Meyers absolutely has been an other-worldly good addition since being acquired via trade with the Las Vegas Raiders in early November. Meyers in the six games since the trade has caught 27 passes for 355 yards and 3 touchdowns. Beyond the statistics, he has given quarterback Trevor Lawrence an uber-reliable receiver whose routes and hands he trusts – and the effects of that trust has been evident as Lawrence and the offense have improved steadily in recent weeks. Meyers deserved the extension no matter the outcome of the Jaguars’ game against the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colo., Sunday. He’s a player this offense needs and now he will be here for the foreseeable future.

Welcome to Jax, Mr. Myers. Make yourself at home and stay a while! How good is that? Go Jags!
He already has been here a while. He’s staying a while. It’s very good.

One fer Meyers! Kudos to Jaguars General Manager James Gladstone and Co. for identifying, trading for and now extending Jakobi Meyers. I was going to compare this excellent decision with some questionable extensions from last year, but I could hear a voice talking about the importance of being nice.
Keep listening to that voice. It’s important to be nice. It’s also sort of tired at this point to slam on the bad decisions of the past. The recent regime had its time. There were good times. They didn’t last. It’s over. Move on. Brighter days are upon us. And be nice.

In my opinion, the Broncos aren’t as good as their record and aren’t good enough to go the whole season without letting a game get away. They seem due for a thrashing. The Jags could very well be that buzzsaw. I’m ready for this one.
That’s a lot of money for Meyers.
Good players who reshape offenses and significantly help your franchise quarterback are expensive. The alternative is having those players play somewhere else. The Jaguars didn’t want that in this case.

This Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos is the most important game in franchise history.
In your experience watching the NFL playoffs, would you truly rather be the No. 1 seed with the bye, or No. 2 seed and play each week? I feel like far too many times the team coming off the bye comes out flat/slow and doesn’t look like themselves.
I without doubt want the No. 1 seed with a bye as opposed to the No. 2 seed with no bye. Rested and ready is better than playing and risking injury. Remember, too: A bye essentially means you win in Round 1 and move on to Round 2 guaranteed. If you’re playing in Round 1, nothing is guaranteed.
No question, but love the Meyers signing. He has earned it and will be a key piece of the next 3 runs to the Super Bowl.
Looks like the Denver game will be “warm” in the low fifties. The senior writer can leave his parka at home. In your experience is the cold and wind in December and January games a thing for the visitors?
Cold is a thing for visiting teams and wind is a real thing. Wind is the biggest thing – bigger than cold or snow.
I think it’s fair to say that Gladstone was a HUGE acquisition for our team. We have shown depth through the season and Meyers has been one of the best acquisitions in recent history. This team is LEGIT! GO JAGS!!
Jaguars Owner Shad Khan previously has said during his tenure that he “got it right” with a certain hire. Sometimes he did. Other times he didn’t. He got it right this past offseason when he hired Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony Boselli, Gladstone and Head Coach Liam Coen.
Trevor is obviously not the answer if they keep benching him in the fourth quarter!
Just so I am clear, we have to win the division to host a playoff game?
You must win the division to host a first-round playoff game. You can host a playoff game after that if you’re a higher seed than your opponent.

Episode 6 of “The Hunt” was a nice change of pace from the norm, as good as that always is! Had me fighting back tears. One fer Josh and one for Wesley! Great to see a guys we love on the field doing something even more important off the field. Go Jags!
One fer Josh and Wesley? Absolutely.
Hey, John. Just remembering when, back in January of ’97, Woody Paige called us “The Jagwads” and all of Denver ran with it … until the clock ran out. You wouldn’t happen to have his phone number, would you? I’d like to leave him a message. Go ahead Woody, say it again. I dare ya!
Former Denver Post columnist Woody Paige, who famously penned the so-called “Jagwads” column in January 1997 – the day the wild-card Jaguars beat the No. 1-seed Broncos in an AFC Wild Card Playoff – did his job very well for a long time. He did a great job that day in early January 1997, apparently.
Zone, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but in the scenario where the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Jags, Los Angeles Chargers and Broncos all finish 13-4, who is the No. 1 seed?! And why does that leave any room for the Houston Texans?
My best playoff calculating and projecting tells me the Jaguars would be the No. 1 seed in this scenario. The Texans can make it as a wild-card team in this scenario.
I think Scott from Daytona Beach meant to ask what Shad got you for Crimma. I assume you got the same gift from your boss that I did from mine – the gift of continued employment. Merry Crimma!
If the code works on December 26, it was a good Krimma.
What happen to Kiser to be put on IR?
Jaguars rookie linebacker Jack Kiser sustained a hamstring injury late a victory over the New York Jets last Sunday.
I’m on the wrong side of 50, but I gotta tell ya. I’ve learned more about football with this new regime than I ever knew in 30 years. These coaches are so transparent and so willing to explain to us couch coaches how they develop and design plays and game plans without ever giving away any information an opponent could use against us. Master communicators. Top notch!
Your response to Donut’s question regarding potential compensatory picks took me a bit by surprise. I was under the impression you believed Gladstone was going to build the team primarily through the draft after he established his ” floor up” philosophy this current year. You’ve also written you are a bit surprised at how well those “floor” players are playing this year. and have contributed in establishing a good core. What leads you to believe Gladstone and Co. will be highly active in free agency when it goes contrary to everything that has happened this year?
I expect the Jaguars to continue building through the draft. I also believe they will be active in free agency next offseason because I expect they will continue to try to be as good as they can possibly be each season.
Jags/Broncos is a big game, but because it’s the Jags, they still don’t get an ounce of respect. The game will not be shown locally in Palm Coast!? This is not a conspiracy, it is obvious. They are showing Pittsburgh Steelers/Detroit Lions instead of our team that plays less than an hour from me!?! We don’t get respect from the national media, we don’t get respect from writers, we don’t get respect from the actual league either. How in the hell does the NFL figure out, “local?” This is one of the better games of the entire week and our game isn’t even being broadcast?! I know you don’t have a proper answer for that, but this is a PERFECT example of the disrespect that most of us feel. A ridiculous failure on the league’s part.
You’re irritated, annoyed and angry. You’re also not wrong.
