Jason Statham’s $104M Remake Of Action Thriller Dominates Netflix Streaming Charts 4 Years Later

Jason Statham‘s thriller remake Wrath of Man is resurging on Netflix’s charts. Statham has long been one of the most reliable action stars in Hollywood. But in this latest phase of his career, the actor has perhaps done the most to demonstrate the point that audiences will still turn up for a well-made bit of genre fare that delivers on its promises.
There’s an argument to be made that Wrath of Man is the best example of Statham’s recent filmography. Directed by Guy Ritchie, in his fourth collaboration with Statham, the 2021 actioner is a loose remake of the French movie Cash Truck. The story follows Statham as a Los Angeles driver who finds his mysterious past being questioned after he thwarts a robbery.

Now, four years after Wrath of Man‘s release, the remake is a big hit on Netflix. As of this writing, on December 27, the thriller has leapt to the #1 spot on Netflix in the U.S. It currently beats The Great Flood, Netflix’s breakout sci-fi disaster movie from South Korea. It also beats notable titles such as Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and KPop Demon Hunters.
Wrath of Man‘s strong streaming performance has precedent. The remake also performed well on Hulu earlier this year. It’s also a likely candidate to surge on Netflix, since it was recently added to the platform. But it gets a boost from a well-known and talented Wrath of Man cast that includes Holt McCallany, Jeffrey Donovan, Josh Hartnett, Laz Alonso, Raúl Castillo, DeObia Oparei, Eddie Marsan, and Scott Eastwood.
The familiar faces, whether it’s TV stars such as McCallany (Mindhunter), Donovan (Burn Notice), Alonso (The Boys) or notable movie actors like Hartnett and Eastwood, help to bring a little more to the action scenes. The same can be said for veteran performers such as Marsan, Castillo, and Oparei. There’s a lot of talent on-screen to elevate the run-up to Wrath of Man‘s ending.
The remake grossed $104 million at the box office against a $40 million budget. It’s a less impressive tally than Statham’s The Beekeeper, which made $162 million on the same budget. But it’s still a very worthwhile entry in a long line of Statham movies that excel in delivering simple but very effective pleasures.
Statham’s upcoming projects include a Beekeeper sequel, as well as the crime thriller Mutiny. But he’s the kind of actor who’s built up a healthy list of credits, to the point where, between his new endeavours, viewers aren’t likely to be missing out on something to watch. Wrath of Man‘s quick jump to the top of Netflix is proof.
