1 killed, 15 others injured in major crash involving semi-truck on southbound 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights

BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — One person was killed and 15 others were injured Sunday in a major early morning crash on the southbound 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights.
The collision happened just south of 4th Street around 5 a.m. Details are limited, but the California Highway Patrol told ABC7 a semi-truck collided with multiple vehicles.
One person died at the scene. The Los Angeles Fire Department says 15 people were assessed for injuries, 10 of whom were sent to local hospitals. Their conditions are unknown.
Investigators also said at least one of the vehicles involved caught fire but it has since been extinguished.
Officials say nine vehicles suffered major front-end damage.
It’s unclear what caused the crash.
Meantime, CHP issued a SigAlert closing all lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway at 4th Street until 11 a.m.
