The Night Manager: Everything you need to know before watching the new series

At the villa, Pine and Jed have sex. A disgruntled Corky finds out and subtly threatens them both. Burr also learns of their sexual relationship and says she’s pulling Pine out. He protests, telling her that Roper is about to pull off a major arms deal in Istanbul. When Burr digs her heels in, Pine tells Roper they’re being watched and helps him escape from IEA surveillance. Roper welcomes protégé Pine into his inner circle, leaving the embittered Corky out in the cold. Burr suspects key intel has been leaked to MI6 and fears for the safety of her source.
Episode Five: ‘War as spectator sport’ and surprise switcheroo
After escaping, Roper tells Pine that he had Apo murdered, before revealing that he suspects one of Pine, Jed, Sandy or Corky of being another mole. The entourage arrives at his compound in Syria, The Haven – Roper’s “military kingdom”, staffed by mercenaries who run his arms distribution network and maintain its cover identity as a humanitarian aid organisation. Pine is told to arrange a weapons demonstration for a consortium of buyers. Cue pyrotechnics and an obliterated village.
In London, Pamela reassigns Mayhew and Dromgoole pressurises Burr into dropping Limpet. Pine notes down the registration numbers of the aid convoy delivering the weapons and sneaks out at night to meet Jed, urging her to frame Corky. When Pine sneaks out of the compound to deliver the convoy note to Burr, Corky catches him. They fight and Pine is forced to bludgeon Corky to death. He lies to Roper that Corky was meeting someone outside the fence, further framing him as the traitor.
Burr arranges a US military inspection of Roper’s trucks at the Syrian border, but they do indeed contain agricultural machinery. Pine realises it was Roper’s ruse to root out the mole. Steadman tries to convince Burr that Pine has turned, but she doesn’t believe it. Roper’s entourage heads for Cairo and contacts old gun-running ally Freddie Hamid. Back in London, Burr’s home is ransacked and she finds her husband lying wounded on the floor.
Episode Six: An explosive Oedipal finale
After the decoy convoy debacle, the IEA is disbanded. Pine contacts the discredited Burr, who covertly travels to Cairo with Steadman, and insists they can still halt the arms deal. Jed obtains the code to Roper’s hotel safe, which Burr and Steadman use to steal registration certificates for the weapons, while Roper’s entourage visits a casino. Pine spikes old enemy Hamid’s drink and takes him home. After confronting Hamid about Sophie’s death and learning that Roper ordered it, Pine drowns him in his pool.
Pine works with former Nefertiti Hotel colleague Youssuf and his Muslim Brotherhood contacts to infiltrate the compound where the weapons are being stored. The following morning, Jed is caught by Roper. He has her waterboarded and concludes that Pine is the mole. Roper confronts Pine, threatening to kill Jed if he doesn’t go through with the sale. Unbeknown to them, Burr rescues Jed.
After the consortium arrives, Pine uses a phone to blow up the trucks remotely, revealing he transferred the initial $300m down-payment. The angry buyers demand their money back. Pine tells Roper he can have the cash if Jed is released. An enraged Roper threatens both the consortium and Pine. Arriving back at the hotel, Roper is confronted by Burr. He tries to have Dromgoole call her off, but discovers Burr has blackmailed him into cutting off support. Local police arrest Roper and his entourage. The angered buyers commandeer the convoy, tipped off by Pine. Roper realises a violent fate awaits him. In the aftermath, Jed returns to America to see her estranged son. Pine promises to come and find her.
