Ken Nunn, a longtime personal-injury lawyer and iconic Bloomington figure, died on Christmas Eve.
The 85-year-old attorney set up his first law office in Bloomington in 1967, starting out with a card table and folding chairs. Ken Nunn’s law firm grew over five decades into Indiana’s largest personal injury practice.
His name, face and the phone number 1-800-Call-Ken are known around the state from advertising on TV, radio, billboards, social media and the sides of transit buses.
Nunn’s passing was announced on social media by his law office on Christmas Day. “It is with great sadness that we announce that our founder and leader, Ken Nunn, passed away on the morning of December 24th.”
Nunn was born and grew up in Jeffersonville. He earned a business degree and then his law degree from Indiana University, the later in 1967. That same year he began his law practice in Bloomington.
In 2017, while celebrating the 50th anniversary of his law office, Nunn told The Herald-Times: “The firm started out with humble beginnings consisting of only a poker table, four fold-up chairs and 27-year-old Nunn being the sole employee,” the H-T story said. “My office was on the second floor near the post office and I would watch out the windows to see if any new clients would come in. I just waited for the phone to ring.”
By that time, Nunn’s law office had become highly successful and had moved to the 30,000-square-foot building visible from I-69 where it continues to operate with 90 employees, including 12 lawyers specializing in personal injury cases. The practice serves every Indiana county.
In addition to his work, Nunn was known for supporting many charities. Just before Christmas, on Dec. 15, Nunn gave bicycles to members of the local Boys and Girls Club, as he had done for years.
He is survived by his daughter, Vicky Nunn; his son, David Nunn; and his two grandchildren, Katie Nunn and Jimmy Nunn.
Vicky Nunn, who was inspired to become an attorney by her father and has been part of Ken Nunn Law Office since 2001, will continue at the helm of her father’s firm.
