“TIMMYTIM IS OFFICIALLY UNC.” So sayeth Timothée Chalamet’s official birthday Instagram post. But the best present Chalamet got this bday/xmas weekend (besides a shingle on the Kardiashian-Jenner gingerbread house) was a successful box office debut for Marty Supreme. Timmy really said “Marty Supreme Christmas Day,” and the nation said it back. The A24 flick came in at number 3 at the end of Christmas weekend, with $27.1 million domestic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s the best opening A24 has had thus far. The film had already broken the record for best per-screen-average in its limited release. Dream big, indeed.
At the top of the box office was Avatar: Fire and Ash. Duh. Is Big Jim going to be anywhere but the tippy top of the b.o.? Are space whales going to show up for court without their huge space whale earrings? The answer to both is a big hell no. The film has only seen a 28% drop-off in its second week of release, and is expected to cross the $1-billion mark in its third. At number 2 is fellow billionaires club member Zootopia 2. Disney isn’t playing around; they’re the only studio with any movies that made over $1 bil, and soon they’ll have three. Sivako!
