Canada issues serious new travel advisory for Mexico

Canada has updated its travel advisory for Mexico ahead of a major sporting event expected to attract large numbers of visitors.
On Monday, Dec. 22, the Government of Canada issued a travel update warning Canadians of possible safety and security risks in Mexico due to the upcoming FIFA World Cup 26.
“The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across 16 cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States,” reads the statement.
According to the FIFA website, Mexico is set to host the event in Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey.
Planning to head down south to catch a soccer match? Canada is warning travellers to expect large crowds, which can increase their risk of illness and injury.
“The risk of accidental injury increases in large crowds (e.g., stampedes),” warns the advisory. “If possible, avoid crowded areas.”
It’s also important to know where you can access medical care if required and to carry information about any existing medical conditions.
The government is urging travellers to practice good hand hygiene, avoid contact with sick people, and make sure to eat and drink safely. The update also emphasizes the importance of knowing where to access medical care, and tourists are urged to carry emergency contact information, including details for Canadian offices abroad.
Canadians can also better protect themselves by talking to a healthcare provider or visiting a clinic around six weeks before their trip for personalized health advice. Ask your healthcare provider about whether or not your vaccinations are up-to-date, which pre-travel vaccines or medications you might need, and which medications you’re currently taking or plan to bring with you.
Tourists can make sure they’re better prepared for the unexpected by packing a travel health kit and considering purchasing travel insurance.
“If you feel sick during or after travel, wear a mask, limit contact with others, and notify health professionals about your symptoms and travel history,” states the advisory.
The government regularly updates travel advice and advisories for different countries to help Canadians make informed decisions and travel safely while abroad.
Canadians travelling internationally can sign up for the Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA), a free and confidential service that notifies Canadian citizens outside the country of an emergency abroad or a personal emergency at home.
