The original was the superhero film we didn’t know we all needed and when the sequel was released it was even bigger and funnier than the first.
Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, was released in 2016 and was a huge box office smash, despite being rated R. Fans couldn’t wait for the follow up and when Deadpool 2 was released just two years later it was another massive success, earning $785.9 million worldwide against a $110 million production budget. It also went on to become the highest grossing film in the X Men series. The movie even features a, very short, cameo from Hollywood legend, Brad Pitt, who played The Vanisher. He was only visible for a few seconds when he is electrocuted by power lines.

The film starts with our unlikely hero, wisecracking Deadpool coming across an angry teenage mutant living in an orphanage called Russell. The young boy soon becomes the target of an enhanced soldier from the future called Cable and Deadpool realises he has no choice but to help protect the lad from an enemy who’ll be sure to kill him otherwise.
Joining forces with Bedlam, Shatterstar, Domino and a host of other mutants to help in his quest to protect Russell, the usual mayhem, battles and chaos follows. Critics loved the second instalment in the Deadpool franchise with one even joking it’s the “best sequel since The Godfather: Part II”.

Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun Times said: “Deadpool 2 is wicked, dark fun from start to finish, with some twisted and very funny special effects, cool production elements [and] terrific ensemble work.” Deadpool 2 also scores an impressive 85 percent approval rating on the movie review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes.
One critic wrote: “The flames are fattened, the bloodshed is bolstered, and the hail of hot lead is heightened as all of these wild elements compose a parade of profanity and dirty delights.” Another said: “Overall, not as good as the first film. While the sequel is bigger and funnier, the story is more uneven. However, it does succeed in places where the previous one failed… it has [more] gravitas.”

And a third added: “Like many sequels, it doesn’t feel as fresh and original as the first only because we are now used to the character and what to expect. On the flip side, it’s bolder, bigger, and definitely pushes the boundaries.”
Fans also loved the second Deadpool movie. One wrote: “Bigger, bloodier, and just as self-aware, Deadpool 2 doubles down on the meta-humor and mayhem that made the original a hit—though not all of its jokes hit with the same precision. Ryan Reynolds once again delivers a pitch-perfect performance as the foul-mouthed antihero, bringing his signature mix of sarcasm, heart, and ultraviolence to a sequel that’s equal parts absurd and oddly touching.”

Another said: “Absolutely fantastic movie! Would recommend everyone to watch this masterpiece of a movie!” While a third added: “Doubles down on everything fans loved about the original—more action, more laughs, and even more heart. Ryan Reynolds is once again perfect as the Merc with a Mouth, delivering savage one-liners and surprising emotional depth. The addition of characters like Cable and Domino brings a fresh dynamic, and the film never takes itself too seriously. It’s hilarious, chaotic, and unexpectedly touching. A wild ride from start to finish—five stars for pure, unfiltered fun.”
Deadpool 2 is on Film 4 at 9pm on Monday, December 29.
