City urging people to stay off roads tonight as plows ‘remain fully deployed’

City ‘thanks residents for their patience and cooperation’ in latest update, says services and facilities should be back to normal by tomorrow morning

The city is urging residents to stay off the roads tonight unless absolutely necessary, as snowplow operators remain “fully deployed” to deal with the ongoing storm.

“Please avoid travelling on city streets unless it is essential,” the city says in an update, released shortly after 3:30 p.m. “Staying off the roads allows snowplow operators to clear routes more efficiently. Drivers who must travel are urged to adjust their driving to road conditions and maintain a safe distance from heavy equipment.”

The city says it expects services and facilities to return to normal operations tomorrow morning.

“The city thanks residents for their patience and cooperation during this challenging weather event,” the update states. “With continued snowfall and additional accumulation forecasted, residents are advised to remain cautious.”

Below is the full update:

The City of Sault Ste. Marie continues to respond to a Significant Weather Event involving freezing rain, resulting in 5 to 10 mm of ice accretion, along with heavy snowfall accumulations of 20 to 40 cm.

Below are the latest updates regarding municipal services and operations for the evening of Dec. 29, 2025:

  • Road Clearing Efforts: Public Works crews continue to prioritize main and collector roads, followed by residential streets. Due to ongoing snowfall, not all residential streets have been serviced at this time. All available staff and equipment remain fully deployed to manage snow accumulation and ice formation.

Motorists are reminded to proceed with caution when travelling on City streets. Sidewalks must not be blocked at any time, and on-street parking is discouraged during winter events to allow snowplows to operate safely and efficiently. Parking on City streets is not permitted from November 1 to April 30 between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m.

  • Travel Advisory: Please avoid travelling on City streets unless it is essential. Staying off the roads allows snowplow operators to clear routes more efficiently. Drivers who must travel are urged to adjust their driving to road conditions and maintain a safe distance from heavy equipment.
  • Transit: Sault Transit and Parabus services are cancelled for the remainder of the evening. Weather permitting, service is expected to resume tomorrow at 6:15 a.m. Bus routes may continue to experience delays, and Parabus vehicles may encounter difficulties accessing unplowed parking lots. Please remain patient.
  • Garbage and Recycling: Today’s garbage and recycling collection has been postponed until next Monday. Residents impacted by the delay may place additional bags at the curb for collection next week. Please remove bins from the roadway as soon as possible to support ongoing snow removal efforts. Weather permitting, regular garbage and recycling service is expected to resume on Tuesday morning.

Please note that the City’s landfill will close today at 3:30 p.m.

Facility Updates:

  • Community Centres: Weather permitting, all City-operated community centres are expected to reopen tomorrow, with regular programming resuming.
  • Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre: Weather permitting, the Civic Centre is expected to reopen for regular operations tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

The City thanks residents for their patience and cooperation during this challenging weather event. With continued snowfall and additional accumulation forecasted, residents are advised to remain cautious.
