A man has been arrested following an incident at a hospital in which five people were reportedly injured. Police said a man in his 20s has been detained at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows this afternoon.

Witnesses report seeing a man with a metal bar attacking staff and patients just after noon. Police remain on the scene.

A local councillor said five people had been injured but were ‘OK and safe and are able to contact their families’.

St Helen’s Police posted on X: “We are currently dealing with an incident at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows. A man in his 20s has been arrested.

“Officers remain at scene. We will provide a further update as soon as available. Please follow our social media accounts for updates.”

Writing on his Facebook page Coun Seve Gomez-Aspron said: “There has been an incident at Newton Hospital. Around 5 people have been injured.

“All of which are now OK and safe and are able to contact their families. Do not speculate on Facebook. The Police have still cordoned off the scene so avoid the area.

“I would like to put on record my thanks and appreciation for Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust for the fantastic job they do.”

Merseyside Police have been contacted for further comment.
