Glide into 2026: the Rideau Canal Skateway Opens Tomorrow!

News release
Tuesday, December 30, 2025
National Capital Region — The National Capital Commission (NCC) is delighted to announce the start of the Rideau Canal Skateway’s 56th season, just in time to ring in the new year! On Wednesday, December 31, at 8 am, a 3.4-km section from the Somerset West access point to the Bank Street Bridge will open to skaters.
The cold weather in December provided ideal conditions for our operations. More sections of the Skateway should open as soon as ice conditions permit.
This season, due to the rehabilitation of the Patterson Creek bridge, the Patterson Creek skating area will be closed. A temporary staircase was added nearby, close to Monkland Avenue.
Tips for a perfect outing on the Skateway
Use the Rideau Canal Skateway interactive map to make the most of your time on the ice. You will see the latest ice conditions in each section, access points with stairs and universal ramps, change rooms, washrooms, rental services and more.
Rest areas and concessions located along the Skateway are perfect spots to slow down and take in the beauty of our winter capital. Stop by the BeaverTails® kiosks at the Concord or Fifth entrances starting tomorrow, or try our other vendors, including new ones like 3Brothers, once they open in the coming days.
Popular walking lane returns
Stretching from Waverly to Bank, and Lakeview to Dow’s Lake, the walking lanes will be open whenever a Skateway section is open and once there is enough snow packed. It’s a great option to enjoy the canal without skating, or when skating conditions aren’t ideal.
Science on the Skateway with Carleton University
The NCC has adapted its operations to mitigate the effects of climate change on the Rideau Canal Skateway. Our partners at Carleton University have helped us identify strategies and collect data to guide the maintenance of the Skateway and improve the visitor experience.
