Simon Parkes disappeared on a night out in Gibraltar with crewmates

Police have ended their investigation into the disappearance of a Royal Navy sailor 39 years ago.

Simon Parkes, from Bristol, was last seen in December 1986 when the ship he was serving on, HMS Illustrious, was docked in Gibraltar.

The 18-year-old radio operator failed to return after a night out with crewmates and the ship returned to Portsmouth without him.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said, following the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service, that the investigation would be filed unless further information came to light.

Mr Parkes’ disappearance was previously part of an investigation into killer Allan Grimson, a former petty officer jailed for life for the murder of two sailors and who had been serving on board the aircraft carrier.

In 2019, specialist teams, including forensic experts, returned to Gibraltar to carry out searches and enquiries alongside Royal Gibraltar Police.

Police said officers would continue to support the coroner with their enquiries.

Det Supt Adam Edwards said: “Officers have worked tirelessly to investigate the disappearance of Simon Parkes, and to find answers for his devastated family.

“The full circumstances surrounding Simon’s disappearance still remain unknown, however police will continue to support the ongoing coronial process.

“As with any cold case, no case is ever closed indefinitely – if we get new information that offers new and legitimate investigative opportunities then we will take further action.”

Mr Edwards said officers were still keen to hear from anyone with information.

He said: “I know it was a long time ago, but if there is anything you remember being strange or out of place please get in touch.”
