Starbucks closed about 400 locations in 2025

(CNN/Gray News) – You might start noticing fewer Starbucks shops around.
After decades of constant growth, the chain is now shrinking its presence in major U.S. cities.
Starbucks closed about 400 locations in September 2025, mostly in large metropolitan areas, including 42 shops in New York City alone.
That’s due to rising competition in saturated areas, remote work and higher costs.
The company says it will now focus on fewer, stronger locations and new designs starting in 2026.
In a statement via email, a company spokesperson said:
“Starbucks regularly evaluates our portfolio of coffeehouses to make sure that we are meeting the needs of our customers. Opening and closing stores is a standard part of our business, and we don’t have additional news in the US or elsewhere to share.”
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story reported that Starbucks planned to close 400 locations in the near future. This story has been corrected to reflect that the closures have already taken place.
