WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

These teams opened the season against each other with Toronto earning a 2-1 win in St. Paul. Three of the last four regular season meetings between the teams have been decided by the same score. The Sceptres are 6-0-0-0 against the Frost all-time (regular and postseason) when holding them to fewer than two goals and 1-2-2-4 when allowing multiple goals, with the lone regulation win coming in Game 1 of last season’s playoff series at Coca-Cola Coliseum.

The Frost topped Vancouver, 2-1, in overtime in a Takeover Tour game in Edmonton on Saturday after losing in overtime to Ottawa in their previous game. This is the first time Minnesota has played consecutive regular-season games decided by an overtime goal since Jan. 27-28, 2024. Only one PWHL team (New York) has had three such games in a row.

Taylor Heise’s first goal of the season was the overtime winner on Saturday. Her final goal of last season was also an overtime winner, one that knocked Toronto out of the postseason. Heise has six career PWHL game-winning goals (regular and postseason), three of which have come against the Sceptres.

Britta Curl-Salemme leads the PWHL with seven assists and nine points and is riding a three-game point streak (2G, 2A) which is tied for the longest of her career. Last season, one of her two multi-goal games came in Toronto on Dec. 7.

Kendall Coyne Schofield scored her first of a league-leading five goals in the season opener against Toronto. The Frost captain had four points in three games played in Toronto last season, including the overtime winner on Mar. 9.

Mae Batherson (1G, 3A) and Frost first round-pick Kendall Cooper (4A) are tied for the team lead in scoring among defenders with career-high three-game point streaks. Cooper’s two power play assists are tied for second among defenders.

Cooper, who hails from Oakville, and fellow Frost rookies Brooke Becker and Vanessa Upson played together for the nearby Stoney Creek Sabres with Toronto’s Lauren Messier. The team frequently played the Etobicoke Dolphins who call Ford Performance Centre, the Sceptres training facility, home.

The Sceptres beat the Victoire, 2-1, at the Bell Centre in Montréal on Saturday, their fourth consecutive one-goal game (2-0-2-0) and fifth of the season. In the first two seasons, the Sceptres played 23 one-goal games, going 6-7-6-4 in them. Every other PWHL team played at least 27 such games.

Toronto has points in four straight games (2-0-2-0). Last season they tied Boston for the longest point streak at nine, going 5-2-2-0 from Jan. 25 to Feb. 23, which included a regulation win, overtime win, and overtime loss against Minnesota.

Jesse Compher opened the scoring for the Sceptres in Montréal and now has four points (3G, 1A) in her last three games after totaling just one point (an assist) in her first five games. Compher had one point (a goal) in nine regular and postseason games against Minnesota in the inaugural season but had eight points (3G, 5A) in 10 total games last season.

Daryl Watts scored for the second straight game and extended her point streak to three games with the eventual game-winning goal on Saturday. She also tied a season high with six shots on goal. Her 4.0 shots on goal per game are tied for the most in the league (minimum two games played).

Watts (Dec. 4) and captain Blayre Turnbull (Dec. 21) have scored the team’s only two power play goals this season as the Sceptres rank eighth on the power play (9.5%) after leading the league last season (25.8%). Watts tied for the team lead with 4 PPG and Turnbull had 1 PPG in the 2024-25 campaign.

Anna Kjellbin leads all Sceptres defenders with a career-high four points (1G, 3A). Toronto and Minnesota are two of four teams tied for third in points by defenders with 12 along with New York and Vancouver, behind Boston (17) and Ottawa (13) and ahead of Montréal (8) and Seattle (7).

Elaine Chuli is one of four goaltenders this season to win her first three starts along with Minnesota’s Nicole Hensley, Boston’s Aerin Frankel and Seattle’s Hannah Murphy. Her five straight wins in the inaugural season with Montréal are the most by any goaltender in PWHL history to open a campaign.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

“Our primary focus is to build off of the energy we created as a team in Montréal with our last win. Minnesota always shows up to compete, and we are excited to take them on in front of our home crowd.” – Sceptres forward Clair DeGeorge
