Kiyan Anthony lost the handle, leading to a runout and easy bucket for the Tigers. Then, Akir Souare turns it over stepping on the end line inbounding the ball.
Jake Wahlin hits a turnaround jumper over Betsey in the paint to push the Clemson lead to seven.
Naithan George has a tough cover today in Dillon Hunter, making the transition offense that much more important. George snaps a pass to Kiyan Anthony, who gets a basket on a goaltend that is challenged by Clemson coach Brad Brownell.
The goaltend call was overturned, and it goes into the books as a clean block by Godfrey.
SCORE UPDATE: Clemson 16, Syracuse 11 with 11:28 remaining first half
Clemson started the game shooting better than 50% from the field, as the Tigers have gotten some easy baskets underneath en route to a 10-0 run to take an early 12-3 lead.
Tyler Betsey has scored six points off the bench, draining a 3 and hitting three free throws after being fouled on another 3.
Freeman did not start the game but entered the game with 16:25 remaining and grabbed a defensive board and blocked a shot in the early going.
Pregame
Syracuse opens ACC play with the expected return of injured forward Donnie Freeman.
The sophomore missed the previous nine games over the last month with an undisclosed injury to his lower-right leg.
Freeman’s return looms as the predominant storyline entering Wednesday’s game, which kicks off the 18-game conference slate with the kind of NCAA Tournament resume-shaping opportunity the Orange has to grab on its home court.
How Freeman performs coming off the long layoff could help decide this one. His potential role in grabbing rebounds and putting another competent free throw shooter on the floor may help offset some of the Orange’s biggest weaknesses.
Clemson, like Syracuse, lost most of its 2024-25 roster but returns senior forward RJ Godfrey, a member of its 2024 Elite Eight team who spent last season at Georgia.
Dillon Hunter and Jestin Porter are a dangerous backcourt duo that can shoot. Hunter (45.5%) won’t take many 3s, but Porter (38.9%) will.
