Iqaluit postpones New Year’s Eve fireworks due to weather

The City of Iqaluit has postponed its New Year’s Eve fireworks and cancelled the final night of indoor Christmas games due to inclement weather expected Wednesday evening.
Fireworks are now set to blast off Friday at 8 p.m., according to a city news release issued Wednesday afternoon.
Iqaluit experienced unseasonably mild weather on the final day of the year. Temperatures reached 5 C, according to Environment Canada, causing much of the snow in the city to melt.
Environment Canada is also warning of winds reaching 90 to 100 km/h beginning overnight Wednesday and ending Thursday morning.
On Wednesday afternoon, the city also announced the cancellation its final night of Christmas games at the Cadet Hall that had been slated for Wednesday night.
Late in the afternoon, there was no word about changes to the candy toss scheduled for New Year’s Day outside Nakasuk Elementary School.
However, trucked water and sewage services are suspended until further notice.
