Colder weather sets in and should stick around

A blast of cold, dry air is settling in across the Eastern Shore, bringing below-average temperatures and brisk conditions to both Accomack and Northampton counties through the middle of the week.
Today will feel sharply colder as a large upper-level weather trough establishes itself over the eastern United States. Daytime temperatures are expected to struggle to reach 40 degrees, and steady northwest winds will keep wind chills in the 20s for much of the day. Despite the chill, skies are expected to remain mostly sunny. Conditions will turn even colder Tuesday night, with lows falling into the mid to upper 20s across the Shore.
The cold pattern persists into Wednesday, though temperatures will moderate slightly. Highs are forecast to reach the mid to upper 40s, but breezy conditions will keep wind chills largely in the 30s. Sunshine is expected for much of the day before clouds gradually increase from the northwest late on New Year’s Eve. Overnight lows are expected to drop back into the mid and upper 20s in northern sections of the Shore, including Accomack County, with low 30s possible in southern Northampton County.
Looking ahead to the latter part of the week, near to below-average temperatures are expected to continue. A reinforcing dry cold front will move through early Thursday, keeping highs mostly in the 30s to lower 40s on the Eastern Shore. Thursday night could be the coldest of the stretch, with temperatures falling into the low to mid 20s. Conditions gradually moderate heading into the weekend, with highs returning to the 40s, though forecasters are monitoring a system that could pass offshore late in the week. Dry weather is expected to dominate as high pressure returns by Sunday.
