Baby New Year! Couple welcomes baby girl in Harlem at the stroke of midnight

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — New York City has its first baby of the New Year!

The city’s public health care system’s first baby of 2026 was welcomed at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem Thursday morning right at 12:00 a.m.

The yet unnamed baby girl weighs 7lbs. 2.8oz, and measures 21.26 in.

The baby girl was born to mom and dad Oumy Niang and Amadou Niang.

This is the Harlem couple’s fifth child. Three of their previous children were also born at Harlem Hospital.

The Harlem Hospital birth breaks Brooklyn’s dominance in producing the year’s first baby.

In 2025, the Crumbie twins were born just a minute after midnight at Kings County Hospital.

The five preceding first city hospital births of the year were at Coney Island Hospital, now known as NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health.

The city’s public health system delivers thousands of babies every year.

New York City’s public health system says its 11 hospitals provide expert prenatal care, labor and delivery services, family planning, comprehensive gynecology, women’s health and primary care outpatient medical support for women at every stage of life.
