President Jeffrey R. Holland Laid to Rest in His Beloved Hometown

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveled to southern Utah for the interment of their fellow Apostle and President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, President Jeffrey R. Holland, in his beloved hometown of St. George, Utah, on January 1, 2026.
Despite the rain, hundreds of people honored the Church leader by lining the route to the cemetery, which included several landmarks meaningful to President Holland and his family, such as the St. George Utah Temple, the St. George Tabernacle, his childhood home and the Jeffrey R. Holland Centennial Commons at Utah Tech University.

Some 250 missionaries from the Utah St. George Mission gathered in front of the temple and sang “Amazing Grace” as the hearse and procession passed them. Utah St. George Mission President Nels Thorderson said, “Our missionaries just love [President Holland] so dearly and love this opportunity to pay some respect to him and his family, as well as to the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Following the invocation by Elder Uchtdorf, Mary Alice McCann, President Holland’s daughter, said during her remarks that as a boy, her father had roamed the surrounding red hills and played sports in the city’s parks. “He met a little girl named Patricia. And [he] began a lifetime of gospel study and faith, all on the backs of those family members who came before him and who surround us today in this cemetery,” she said.

“Ancestral grit and dedication coursed through the veins of Jeffrey R. Holland,” whose life was built on “unswerving commitment to serve the Lord and His kingdom.”
David F. Holland, a son, conducted the interment service. Elder Matthew S. Holland, General Authority Seventy, dedicated the grave for his father, who was laid to rest alongside his late wife, Patricia, who died July 20, 2023.
Jay and Kari Manning from Sandia Park, New Mexico, who were in town with family for the holidays, decided to view the procession.
“We love him and are grateful for all that he did. So, we wanted to be part of it,” said Kari Manning.
“The principles he taught of the gospel of Jesus Christ were some that had a great effect on my life and helped me as I became a bishop and then served in other callings in the Church,” said Jay Manning. “And he’s a legend in my mind. I have a great, deep appreciation and love for the person that he became in his life and the teachings that he taught the Church.”
