Ottawa Reinforces Pledge to Hear from Harvesters

Federal Minister of Fisheries Joanne Thompson

The federal fisheries minister says dialogue with all involved in the industry is important, and that’s why she and DFO officials went across the country last summer reaching out to people on the ground.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said during the election campaign in the spring that it was time to have fisheries decisions come from the wharf, something which workers and the FFAW have long advocated.

Minister Joanne Thompson, who’s also the MP for St. John’s East, says getting all the perspectives is important.

“Especially if there’s any type of difference in what science is saying versus what harvesters and industry are saying.”
